And Moharram is the biggestevent for a shia ..the month of piety , prayer and the pain that we relive of Hazrat Imam Husain.
and no feast is bigger than this ..the black clothes, the sabils, the majlis, the matams, and women search for brides only for bookmarking and perhaps continue to broach the topic after Moharram ends.
And this is a migrant hub the city of Mumbai and the only time folks interact and intermingle is during the respective house majlis.
And Samiya had two proposalsfrom Shia families settled in the States we politely refused only because we want Samiya to complete her graduation..and Saif is desperately waiting in the wings to ge married and we have to give this a priority as he is a loner and needs a soul mate..talks are going on but my wife refuses to bring me in the picture..not at this stage..and even theshia folks are quizzical about my attire and my beliefs..

This is the scene from Rehmatabad the Shia cemetry once all the juloos reach the gates of the cemetry they place the Alams in the in house mosque of the cemetry and the men squat on the ground to hear the Shame Gariba Majlis this is the most important majlis all over the Shia firmament and it has a universal appeal it talks of the abject poverty of the human mind bent on crushing Truth..Hussain and the satanic Yazidi forces Power and Untruth.
This majlis is recited by the eminent scholar indisputable lover of the Ahle Bait and head of the newly formed AllIndia Shia Personal Board in Lucknow Maulana Mirza Athar Saab..wo has been reciting the Ashura 10days Majlis at Moghul Masjid continously for 45 years a Guiness record of sorts..
The Maulana and his sons are very nice and humble human beings..
After the Shame Ghariba ends there is a huge cry of Ya Hussain Ya Hussain and the zanjir matam and kama matam takes place..I had to abort it as my Sb28 flash was knocked out of my camera and I left the scene but not before I shot the 3 slow motion frames of the scourging without flash.

BAGHDAD, Feb. 22 -- Bombers blasted the gilded dome of one of Shiite Islam's holiest shrines into naked steel and gaping blue sky Wednesday in a provocative assault that roused tens of thousands of Iraqi Shiites into angry protests and deadly clashes.
The highest spiritual leaders of Iraq's Shiite majority simultaneously rallied and restrained the outrage of their followers after the attack on the Askariya shrine in Samarra, about 65 miles north of Baghdad. Though no casualties were reported, the bombing was the most destructive attack on a major shrine since the U.S. invasion, and Iraqi leaders said it was meant to draw Shiites and Sunnis into war. "This is as 9/11 in the United States," said Adel Abdul Mahdi, a Shiite and one of Iraq's two vice presidents.

This is a mumbai cab belonging to a Shia as the normal cab wont ply through this are on Ashura and I had a tough time getting a cab to go to Bandr I walked upto Byculla a 10 minute walk to get a cab..the Sunnis too keep their establishments shut but for them its a day of joy, cartwheels, red clothes,and this is for the Prophets garandson..Hussain...and this is a shocker more than just cartoons..
The Tabblikis dont like our alams, our majlis, yet on the day of Ganpati Immersion they keep quite as they cant attack the Hindu ethos..they stone our alams , they stone our Sabils..but our matams and our chant of live Ya Hussain will not stop..
And even the riots in Lucknow betwen the Hindus and Muslims is actually betwen the Hindus and Sunnies ..The Hindus did not shut their shop for the protest against the cArtoons and Presidents Bush s visit.
The Shias stay to themselves and need not politicize an issue..the bombings of the Sammarah shrines have hurt the shias very badly.. and they had their protest a few days before.1.5 lacs people.
The joint protest at Azad Maidan Mumbai 2nd March was close to 15 lacs people..

This is on the way to the cemetry and I shot a few pictures inside ther graveyard I broke my flash and came back home.. and I have missed out on to many events I dont have the earlier stamina or the enthusiasm..and I wont to change the look of my Moharram pictures..so I try to go to different cities..Kargil would have been ideal snow background..a liitle bit of Alaskan nostalgia..but I was not anchoraged further ..

You can get an idea of the juloos and the crowds and this is the back of the alams and I was shooting from an elevated podium ofthe cops..and sharp shooters on roofs, plain clothesmen in black clothes and a security unseen including the Commissioner of Mumbai Police Mr AN Roy..and his elite body guards..and because of the stoning a few days back between the Tabblikisand the Shias the atmospherewas charged.. and tense.
Across on the left with saffron flags is the water drinking facility of Hon Balasaheb Thackerays Shiv Sena..and this is his area undoubbtedly and the shivsainiks are fans of Shias an opressed race,,and nationalist to the core..as Muslims.
