i am now starting a series on moharram photos and this was shot at kaiser baug mumbai. from 7th of moharram till 9th of moharram kaiser bagh is packed and there is a procession.. of taboot zari alams after the majlis gets over and once the proccession starts the kama matam and the zanjeer matam start
and it is chaos ..and all this was shot 2 yrs back as i am not in mumbai for this event i visit strange places, and participate in the moharram there.and for all this is a shia event,,, exclusively
the majlis is recitation and relives the martyrdom of hazrat imam hussain at karbala iraq under the despotic rule of the ummayad caliphate.. muawiyah and his commander in chief yazid,

i had actually parked myself on the stage and i shot 800 asa pushed it to 1600 nd i600 pushed to 3200 .. and so all the pictures have grains and only the processing and contact sheete would cost me rs 5000 to say the least as pushing was doubling the rates and all this was done manually at vishal bhendes studio.. and i have never exhibited these pictures and never gave to the press,,, and the press is not allowed here at all..only shia photographers..that means habib nassar and me another old man i saw,, but i was the guy in long flowing black robes i only wear black and only black.. and this is like your lent mourning period...

the alams are the standards of the imam and his standard bearer hazrat abbas, and these are huge and heavy.. and these too are moved around the hall.. and the floor is like a pond of blood.. but much is absorbed by the carpets and as they scourge, rose water is sprinkled and the fragrance lasts for ever but some sadist will let the stream on my camera lens and luckily i did not have my point and shoot nikon d70 at that time...i think i was shooting with f 80at that time.

it is tough to shoot the kama matam, the guy who does, it does it to fast and everyone is getting in the way .one is to remove the daggar fom him, as he might get carried away and cut himself deeper and the same daggar cleaned with rose water and cloth is given to the next guy..i have never cut my forehead in mumbai..
and only in hyderabad i prefer flagellating.. on ashura day or on the chelum day and walking on fire wherever it is performed.

after the cut the gash is pressed and the excess blood removed, and cleaned with rose water and in severe cases with the sand of karbala brought from iraq,and if not to the local habib hospital and if i park myself there and not shoot the processsion i can get prize winning picture but that is not my goal...and no glorifying either ..this is a tradition and will not go.. and india is not saudi arabia.. or pakistan for that matter .india has been hospitable to all faiths and religions.. and that is why i say i am an indian muslim.. my name is muslim my surname is indian.. and i am proud when people mistake me for a hindu..my values of humanity are in the right place.

the kids go berserk on this matam, and there is such a commotion as sometimes the blade does no penetrate the skin and so it is starting all over again..i have to push and push to get a shot.. and in the new areas i go it gets tough but i am well known and my myth has spread word of mouth a lot of exxageration though that i am sighted where i have not gone as yet,...and could be true when you are in love and sighted perched on the smile of your beloved and i have been nasty.. and i must apologize for my uncalled for behaviour.. and it is this that will make me different from the rest of them.

straight in the eye ,most of the guys take offence too this kind of picture taking.. and would smash your camera or anything that comes in the way.. and this is the only day the police give permission for knives seords and daggars.. any blade more than 3 "you can be locked up and no reason given,,,but every thing within limits...and 1 more picture and i am going home..

this is not kaiser bagh but on the streets of kurla..and you can see the impact of the blades.. and the backs..and i shot this in the night so .. its tough and you imagine my proximity and how close i am i dont use tele lenses not for such scenes,,and my normal lens is 20 mm... i have not had my lunch.. no appetite iwill go home and this time i will cool off for some time...and i appolgised to the person i hurt .. and i hope she forgives me too.. and the net has really got me where it hurts... my heart,

close to my old home is the khoja shia masjid.. and this is a scene of a moharram segment and all local kids but very exuberant in their beliefs of akkah hussain.. as they call the prophet mohammads grandson imam hussain...and my love life is back on track.. and i thank the almighty or i would be lashing my backside on wikipedia simple english or biz stones bloggersspot.. and biz stone does not answer emails from colored people specially indians fom india..and dogs from other asian countries..and brandon stone also does not answer emails from indians who speak better english than other english speaking gents.. and brandon stone the god of blog.. loves unsubscribing people who interrupt his talk...

THE FIRST TIME I WENT FOR THE AAG KA MATAM..ABOUT 4 YEARS BACK WITH MY CAMERAS AND TRIPOD.. WAS BUSY SHOOTING.. WHAT DO I SEE MY ELDEST SON ASIF SHAKIR ... WALKING ON THE FIRE IT WAS A SHOCK HAPPENED SO FAST. THAT I DID NOT HAVE TIME TO TAKE HIS PICTURE... MY KIDS ARE BIT SHY BEING SEEN WITH ME... GOES WITH THE JOB OF FATHERHOOD.
I STARTED SHOOTING ALL THIS ONCE I GOT MY FIRST CAMERA...A F80...NIKON... THERE IS SO MUCH I HAVE NOT SEEN IN MY 50 YEARS.. I HAVE SETS STANDING IN LINE TO BE SHOWN.. AS YET MY PUSHKAR AND AJMER ONES LIE ON THE SIDE.. I HAVE PICTURES YOU SHOOT IF YOU TAKE DEATH ALONG WITH YOU...
Well with this I end a short sketch called Ag Ka Matam at SupariTalao in Mumbai.
So far the toughest one was Ag Ka Matam in Hussain Tekri Jaorah, which I could not shoot because of the myopic vision of the Hussaini Head Honcho...a man with prehistoric blinkers on his eyes.
