In western Christian tradition, January 6 is celebrated as Epiphany. It goes by other names in various church traditions. In Hispanic and Latin culture, as well as some places in Europe, it is known as Three Kings’ Day (Span: el Dia de los Tres Reyes, la Fiesta de Reyes, or el Dia de los Reyes Magos; Dutch: Driekoningendag). Because of differences in church calendars, mainly between the Eastern Orthodox and the western Catholic and Protestant traditions, both Christmas and Epiphany have been observed at different times in the past. Today, most of the Eastern Orthodox traditions follow the western church calendar. The exceptions are some Greek Orthodox Churches and related traditions (e.g., Russian and Serbian Orthodox) that still follow the older calendar and celebrate Epiphany as the Theophany on January 19th.
Epiphany is the climax of the Christmas Season and the Twelve Days of Christmas, which are usually counted from December 25th until January 5th. In most traditions, the day before Epiphany is the Twelfth Day of Christmas, the evening of which is called Twelfth Night. This is an occasion for feasting in some cultures, including the baking of a special King's Cake as part of the festivities of Epiphany (a King's Cake is part of the observance of Mardi Gras in French Catholic culture of the Southern USA). In some church traditions, January 5th is considered the Eleventh Day of Christmas, while the evening is still counted as the Twelfth Night, the beginning of the Twelfth day of Christmas the following day. In these traditions the Twelfth Day of Christmas is January 6th, the Epiphany.
In traditional Christian churches Christmas, as well as Easter, is celebrated as a period of time, a season of the church year, rather than just a day. The Season of Christmas begins with the First Sunday of Advent, marked by expectation and anticipation, and concludes with Epiphany, which looks ahead to the mission of the church to the world in light of the Nativity. The one or two Sundays between Christmas Day and Epiphany are sometimes called Christmastide. For many Protestant church traditions, the season of Epiphany extends from January 6th until Ash Wednesday, which begins the season of Lent leading to Easter. Depending on the timing of Easter, this includes from four to nine Sundays. Other traditions, especially the Roman Catholic tradition, observe Epiphany as a single day, with the Sundays following Epiphany counted as Ordinary Time. In some western traditions, the last Sunday of Epiphany is celebrated as Transfiguration Sunday.
The term epiphany means "to show" or "to make known" or even "to reveal." In Western churches, it remembers the coming of the wise men bringing gifts to visit the Christ child, who by so doing "reveal" Jesus to the world as Lord and King. In some Central and South American countries influenced by Catholic tradition, Three Kings’ Day, or the night before, is the time for opening Christmas presents. In some eastern churches, Epiphany or the Theophany commemorates Jesus’ baptism, with the visit of the Magi linked to Christmas. In some churches the day is celebrated as Christmas, with Epiphany/Theophany occurring on January 19th.
The colors of Epiphany are usually the colors of Christmas, white and gold, the colors of celebration, newness, and hope that mark the most sacred days of the church year. In traditions that only observe a single day for Epiphany, the colors are often changed after Epiphany to the colors of Ordinary Time, usually green or thematic sanctuary colors, until Transfiguration Sunday, the last Sunday before the beginning of Lent. The colors for Transfiguration Sunday are usually the colors of Holy Days, white and gold.
As with most aspects of the Christian liturgical calendar, Epiphany has theological significance as a teaching tool in the church. The Wise Men or Magi who brought gifts to the infant Jesus were the first Gentiles to acknowledge Jesus as "King" and so were the first to "show" or "reveal" Jesus to a wider world as the incarnate Christ. This act of worship by the Magi, which corresponded to Simeon’s blessing that this child Jesus would be "a light for revelation to the Gentiles" (Luke 2:32), was one of the first indications that Jesus came for all people, of all nations, of all races, and that the work of God in the world would not be limited to only a few.
The day is now observed as a time of focusing on the mission of the church in reaching others by "showing" Jesus as the Savior of all people. It is also a time of focusing on Christian brotherhood and fellowship, especially .
And Epiphany perhaps someother time some other planet if I dont get the one I love and you dont get the one you dont love we could warm our barefeet and give our bare assed destinies a chance..Amen.

The Interior Of St Josephs Chapel Bandra Bazzar
This chapel St Josephs at Bandra Bazzar Road is always shut when I pass it by but on Thursday all the shops were closed for the protest against the cartoons and the doors of the chapel were open and my old neighbour Mrs Gomes was having a talk with the lady caretaker of the chapel.. I took the opportunity to shoot 3 frames with flash ..and the caretaker was shocked when I said Opus Dei instead of Open Sesame.. I told her I had an American wife ..and she believed in Jesus Christ and she married me because I carried my own cross and walked barefeet and the only Simon who could help me a short way to Golgotha was Xris my best friend and he too is in awe of the Blog Mary Magdalene..
and I want to put a tape across my face LOCKED IN...no not me she.
And its 9am I had Seera at the Souhh Indian joint walked through Boran road,reached my shop did my ablutions washing my feet with dettol and I wish I had a Mary Magdalene doing this part of her love for me and her tears mixing into the unkempt waters in the bowl..and her head bowed..every man has a Mary Magdalene
but Mary Magdalene nowadays dont have a Jesus of Jerusalem.. times have changed and the rate of spiritual currency too..

If you want to hunt for the filthiest market in Bandra you dont have to go very far the Bandra Bazzar market wins hands down, and the apathy of the residents and shopkeepers, so the municipal councillars print money through one pretxt or the other, mushrooming of cheek to jowl repair permission channeled monstrosities called buildings, and even the MLA and the MP dont care a damn, and the Congess belonging to Sonia Gandhi is in power..and I am not playing any card here.. during the rains it floods and cats and dogs are swept away, the municipal councillar would not be bothered he must win the elections, and one man that is a lone fighting voice and stays at 100 bandra bazzar road is my editor friend Clarence Gomes of Bandra Samachar and they wont let him stand for elections he is a christian, unbacked by the eunnuch roman catholic church.. and he has pock marks of being too honest and uncorrupt.
This is the Bandra Bazzar road market..in brief.
The chapel, the shia khoja mosque was dilapidated too but it has been reconstructed by Javed Shroff.. and the mosque is now a landmark of sorts.
The Fish market , the Chicken market, the Mutton and Beef market.. the less said the better..its a cesspool of disease..and dirt and you wont eat your food for the rest of your life.

My shop is shut from outside and I have told the folks not to say I am inside the Muslims are shutting all shops forcefully for the protest or Bandh as it is called to protest against the Cartoons of the Holy Prophet.. and the show of strength will be at Azad Maidan in town.. by the Sunnie Muslims.And this is to coincide with President Bushes visit.

On second thoughts I wont need to work at Buzznet all Buzznet in lunch time or bathroom time would be hanging around at Tom Do You LIke its studio.. and a board outside..

This is small chapel in the Bazzar .. Bandra market Road next to the Khoja Shia Mosque and it belongs to the Mount Carmel Parish. and it has seen good days .. it surely has but when I see it I realise
even this chapel where the original East Indian Settlers knelt and prayed and discussed the weather as they were fisher folks and the weather was the most important subject in their lives ..their loved ones went to fish and carried their nets, through the Bandra Fort or through the bylanes of Chimbai where on the beach their boats lazed in the sun and named after their loved ones or Mary Magdalene,Star of Jesus,Rock of Peter ,
And some boats eye pleasingly painted at the Band Stand.. and the faithful stick in hand limping with their mates on thewinding steps and the slope that led to the Baslicca of Mount Mary, and Fr Leslie Ratus with a motley group talking and joking, and Fr Stephen Nazereth guitar in hand strumming away a new note and the smiles on the young Elvis Preslys and Tom Jones, and Engleberts., and Cliff Richards,and the Holy Spirit above theit heads dancing and romping in joy.
And death accompanied the Fisher Folks too..and the rosaries for their safe return,the Angelus,the Novenas, the Genuflections, the Special Mass for favors granted and Peter the fishemans good haul., and Jerome and the stork that had visted his house and baby Priscilla,, and mother Crispin recuperating, and the smell of dried Bombay ducks, the courtyard littered with pickled raw mongoes in water, the famous East Indian masalas and the labouring Marathi women hammering away and tears in the eyes and a record playing "Once you see my darling.Riya Riya Row. and little kids skipping ropes, and the bully with the top dancing on his palm as he shows of his skill and his black and blue half open weepy eye...and secretly pining for ..her name begins with S.
And the hulla hoops and those elastic shrinking waists, and on the porch Uncle Wilfrid talking about the women he slept as a merchant navy guy working for PNO, Cunard Lines ..English passenger ships, and showing his scar when he was caught in the bed with the whore of a captains wife, and sips of Cashew feni. dried bombils, and sorpotel and vindaloo attacking the nostrils.. and Aunty Betty screaming from inside.. "Wilfrid stop bullshiiting that scar is when I went to burn your balls for trying to fuck the maid servant.." and orchestrated laughter.. and more drinks.. and I have tears in my eyes I see old Bandra and this dilapidated Chapel and in this derelict weeping away like me lies the laughter of Aunty Betty and the bullshitting of Uncle Wilfrid..and of an ethos of Bandra from the eyes of a Colaba Wode House Cathedral .childhood.
Yes I am not a Bandra Boy..I came to Bandra in the 80S..and my wife Afshaan joined me 21nov 1986 and this was a company flat and I worked for a slave driver of a heartless fucked boss called Kishore Bajaj and the shop was Badasaab.. a filmy Boutique.
And seeing the St Josephs Bazzar Roadd Chapel..all I can say.
